The INDIGO’s first internal scientific workshop has taken place virtually on June 4, 2021 and gathered 25 people. The program and topics of presentations can be found here.
Eight months after the beginning of the project, the principal investigators and their research teams have met and exchanged about the progress of their research. It was the opportunity for each teams to present their first results, discuss and streamline research questions and work-packages contents.
Prof. Hofmann and Simona Demkova, from the University of Luxembourg, presented the effects of Automated Decision Making on EU Public law as an overarching dimension of the research scope (WP8 and 9). Then each work package leaders presented the preliminary findings in each work packages.
In the morning, Prof. Oriol Mir, Dr. Migle Laukyte and Dr. Clara Velasco from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, exposed the mapping exercise and the methodology for investigating use cases (WP2).
Prof. Jens-Peter Schneider from the University of Freiburg presented the outline for investigating the digitalization of the single market (for goods and non-financial services) (WP3).
Paulina Pesch and Dr. Diana Dimitrova (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) then focused on the ETIAS system and proposed a thorough analysis of the system and the questions that are and will be investigated in the framework of WP5 “Automated Decision Making the EU border control context“.
In the afternoon, Prof. Dirk Zetzsche and Dr. Maria Lucia Passador developped the question of “the Future of “Regulation by Information” in light of integrated information flows and advancements in Regulatory Technologies (RegTech)” in the context of the study of Digital Reporting to Financial Regulators (WP4). The presentation of the preliminary findings for each case studies ended with the presentation of Miikka Hiltunen, from the University of Helsinki, who presented a report on “Online political advertising and disinformation during elections: Regulatory framework in the EU and Member states” in the context of WP6.
After the presentations of each case studies from the regulatory point of view, the floor was given to the team of Prof. Leon Van der Torre (Faculty of science and technology, University of Luxembourg), who presented the technological challenges that arise when digitalization meets regulatory principles. Valeria Zahoransky and Dr. Réka Markovitch explained the Remia formula and the formalization of epistemic rights in digitalized governance.
As an interdisciplinary project gathering lawyers on the one hand and artificial intelligence engineers on the other hand, this workshop was an excellent occasion for fruitful and productive debates between experts in both disciplines.
The next project workshop will take place in Barcelona, on December 10, 2021.
